Healthy Sex and Healthy Government
After only a shallow wade into history, there seems to be a solid connection between marital infidelity/sexual immorality and the governing philosophy of great political leaders. This should be a comfort to those who would consider President-elect Obama a threat to become a ruthless dictator, the anti-christ or some other type of unrepentant despot. President-elect Obama seems by all accounts to be in a happy, stable marriage with his wife, Michelle. There appears to be no history of infidelity or 60’s, self-destructive sexual weirdness. If true, this is a great advantage to the Obamas and to the citizens of the United States. Those who have had the opportunity to experience a healthy marriage and a healthy government know that it is a welcome and moderating influence on their life. Citizens and spouses flourish when security and accountability are part of a covenant.
By contrast, a cursory look at the totalitarian government regimes of the 20th Century highlights leaders with either a dysfunctional marriage relationship or none whatsoever. While history can be clouded by propaganda from such regimes, the information that is available appears dubious. Mussolini was said to have had 160 or more sexual liaisons during his lifetime. Hitler was a homosexual, coprophiliac (you might not want to look that word up!), and sadomasochist. Stalin’s second wife was so distraught by Uncle Joe’s flirtations with other women that she considered taking her own life. The Kremlin said she ultimately did not, but there is evidence to the contrary. Certainly there may be more examples in the 20th century alone. Conversely, few other examples exist that debunk the international connection of fidelity to spouse and responsibility to citizenry.
Carter’s fidelity did not guarantee a great presidency, but the infidelity of FDR, JFK and Clinton was a symptom of moral weakness, which will always leave a nation compromised.
Given what appears to be a solid marriage, all Americans can feel more confident that President Obama will govern responsibly. Let us pray for our soon-to-be-President that he should stay sexually committed to his bride – for his family’s sake first, country second. A healthy marriage has proven to be a bedrock of great American presidents. And great American presidents all have one thing in common: the belief that freedom is given by God and is not to be taken away by man.
So, cheers to Mr. and Mrs. Obama. We wish you continued strength in your marriage; the strength of our country depends on it.
